I would like to share a sobering thought that occurred to me recently on the reality of the future of humankind. Given the current state of global affairs, it seems inevitable that the inhabitants of this world are on a ceaseless road to self-destruction. Regardless of gender, ethnicity, color, creed, religion, socio-economic status, political affiliation, etc., human beings throughout history have callously and perpetually navigated the road to their own end. Their ambition, hubris and propensity for engaging in aggressive and violent behaviors towards one another and their environment has brought civilization to the brink of collapse especially as biological, technological and other advancements evolve while their moral and intellectual capacity to wield them responsibly declines.
In examining geo-politics as one factor contributing to the decay of Homo sapiens, using the term loosely, one can clearly observe the enduring primal nature of mankind to control land, manipulate people and resources for selfish ends. Constant conflict and the tools of warfare are essentially synonymous with geo-political control. The evolution of weapons of warfare and the capacity to exact death and destruction on an increasing scale upon others seems to be the signature of man’s ideal of global governance. Divide, conquer and establish an intermediate level of control, keeping an elite hierarchy at the top while maintaining a “herd of mindless cattle” at the sublevels, seems to be the preferred methodology for achieving these aims.
A prime example of the “herd mentality” can be clearly observed in the current political atmosphere of the United States of America. The attention of the underlying masses is kept on their differences by the two main political parties, while general media serves as an additional layer for influencing and manipulating the proletariat towards the direction the ruling hierarchy wishes them to move towards. Each faction of the commonalty truly believes they have the superior moral high ground and that their ideal should be the “standard” for all others to follow with total disregard for the opposite perspective or viewpoint. Factor in that government institutions as well as the controlled “information society” (media) which, are supposed to remain fair and impartial, are actually stoking the fires exacerbating the internal deterioration of the country and its ultimate free-fall into destruction. Though there are numerous examples of this methodology for controlling the “herd mentality” towards a desired end can be observed across the nations of the world, it is exceptionally astounding that it can occur in a society with the world’s longest existing democracy (another term to be used loosely).
To be sure, there are other aspects of consideration with respect to the decline of humankind’s dominion over this world such as a decrease in the education of the masses, rise in crime, competition for declining resources, general lack of family cohesive structures, a decline in mutual respect with regard to gender, generation, race, religion, national origin, personal orientation, political affiliation and so on with nearly all of the aforementioned fueled by selfishness, greed, hatred, hubris, jealousy and narcissism. In consideration, it is not difficult to understand that no matter how far man has come or evolved over time, there will always be the negative aspect of his being that will ensure his destruction and that of his environment.
It is quite a sobering thought.
