A new year is upon us which means New Year’s Resolutions.  You know those ambitious undertakings that we eagerly pursue  with the intent of enhancing ourselves or our way of life.  Typically, we choose to exercise more, lose weight, imbibe less, get a better job or overhaul our appearance.  It is a cyclical ride that we endure every year charging headstrong into the changes we intend to undertake and then suddenly without care, abandoning them as if they never existed.

Most resolutions fail because they are made hastily at the end of the year in preparation of the new one as if there is some mystical force awaiting us in the month of January to assist in manifesting all our dreams and desires into reality.  I believe that a new year is symbolic to us of new beginnings when In truth, resolutions can be made at any time and are no less important than those made on New Years Day.

When formulating resolutions I believe a methodical business approach works best. One that begins by setting goals that are Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely (SMART) are those that will more than likely be successful.  So for example, if your resolution is to lose weight then your SMART goal may be set up in this manner:

  1. Determine exactly how much weight you are targeting for loss.
  2. Identify the means by which you will measure your loss and at what intervals you will take the measurements. Be specific!
  3. Ensure that you have the proper focus, resources and time to achieve your targets
  4. Ensure your target is not too difficult or too easy. Choose one that will push your limits and that are in-line with your needs and desires
  5. Set dates for achievement and remain accountable to them

Some resolutions can be a little abstract or not well defined such as wanting to obtain more education or be a wiser person. These are still quite achievable as long as you are able to quantify it and identify exactly what your desired outcome will look like.  For example, if you desire to be more to be healthier for the upcoming year then your SMART goal may look something like this:

Whatever your goals are for the new year, ensure that they are changes you truly desire to make and relevant to the overall big picture that you are working towards.  Most of all, be SMART in the way you initiate the desired changes and I am sure that success will be yours by this time next year!
